Rat Ogre take 2

Trying to get better at painting Skaven.

Painted miniature of a mutated rat-like creature with a large claw, metal arm cannon, and glowing green boils, standing snarling on a slime-covered base.

I'm still working my way through the Skaventide Skaven spearhead, and I'm trying to refine my technique on the big bois before knuckling down to the clan rats.

The first one I did was a little dull for my taste:

My first rat ogre.

So, second time around, I used a lighter primer this time around and did much of the base coat using contrast paints, then layering up on the details more traditionally. I'm pretty pleased with the result. It won't win any awards, but it'll look good enough on the gaming table, and that's what really matters to me at this point.

Here's a closer look:

For basing, I wanted a "warpstone corrupted earth" look, as the vermindoom seeps into the Mortal Realms. My first attempt wasn't great:

Just a smidge of crackle

Our working theory was that I hadn't put the technical pain on thick enough. So, I tried again. This time I layered it on much, much thicker, and hoped for the best:

Close-up of a miniature figure’s base covered in glossy black liquid texture, with a brown, furred leg and green cloak visible above, suggesting a wet or oily surface effect.
Thick, gloopy Mordant Earth.

And then, I left it and tried not to think about it for 24 hours…

The result?

Close-up of a miniature figure’s base showing cracked, textured ground painted dark with glowing green fissures, suggesting eerie, magical energy.
Lovely warpstone sludge
